Fall 1999

ankara update

Coming in September from Krause Publications is Barbara McGuire's new book Foundations in Polymer Clay Design. The book explains fundamental design concepts illustrated with elaborate polymer clay works of many artists. Barbara is the creative director of Accent Import-Export Inc., as well as an established artist and professional demonstrator. Three AnKara Designs
originals, including an innovative grapevine necklace utilizing clay , wire mesh, and glass can be seen in this art book. The book is available from Ann and Karen for $21.95.

AnKara Designs mixed media accessories are featured in the September/October 1999 issue of Jewelry Crafts magazine. Ann and Karen were selected by arts and crafts publications writer Esther Anderson to create pieces from one ounce of Precious Metal Clay (PMC). PMC is a modeling material that can be hand sculpted, embossed, or molded, and then fired to become fine silver. Esther, a creative industry developer, wrote an introductory article for the July/August issue describing the basic techniques for working with PMC. The follow up story presents the artists' creations from the PMC challenge and includes biographies of the participants.

Guitarist and songwriter Racquel Zonte just released her new CD titled Give
Yourself Away. The back cover of the exotic rock album shows the musician
wearing custom designed AnKara accessories.

Polymer Clay 2000, a Juried Calendar, due out this fall, will showcase the
works of 72 artists in 105 images. The calendar is the vision of Trudy
Schwartz-Burrill of To Clay Or Not To Clay. There will be an exhibit of the calendar items at the SoHo Gallery in Pensecola, Florida in October. Ann and Karen submitted an intricate butterfly necklace appearing in one of
the spring months.

Butterflies, camellias, and portrait cameos are now available in the Huntington Library bookstore. Earrings, necklaces, pins, and hair clips complement the popular rose accented styles in the expanding collection.

Soap opera fans may have spotted Krista Tesreau (ex-Tina, One Life To Live)
shopping in the AnKara booth at the Hermosa Beach Fiesta de las Artes.

it's in the bag
Has your favorite AnKara earring made friends with the dust bunnies in the
vacuum cleaner bag? Did your earring swim down the drain while you were
washing dishes? Not to worry, it can be replaced! If you have lost one earring in a pair, bring the single one to a show, or mail it in a padded envelope to the AnKara Designs studio, and it can be replaced for only the cost of one, not two. Ann and Karen can also switch earring backs to your desired style, including basic hooks, lever backs, ball posts, clip ons, or nylon posts. Make sure to look for the new items this fall- illusion necklaces, an expanded array of hair accessories, and a new pearl color-Tahiti, an iridescent gray.
