ankara update

In a chance meeting on an airplane, Karen met fashion stylist Lawrence Zarian, the Fashion Guy. The dynamic and talented Lawrence is not only recognized from his regular appearances on the KTLA Morning News in Los Angeles, but also travels around the country coordinating fashion segments for many other television programs. He has featured AnKara Designs jewelry for both women and men on the KTLA Morning News, Good Day Philadelphia, Good Morning Texas, and Fox Thing in the Morning in Chicago. With repeated appearances on the KTLA Morning News, AnKara Designs accessories have been worn by news personalities Barbara Beck, Carlos Amescqua, Mark Kriski , Sam Rubin, Emmett M, and Sharon Tay. Upon Lawrence’s request, Karen and Ann developed a men’s line of beaded bracelets and chokers to be shown during a men’s swimwear segment on Live with Regis and Kathie Lee. The men’s line, called Urban Harmony, is styled for the casual cosmopolitan male and is currently available on the AnKara web site at www.AnKaraDesigns.com. Bernie Taupin, songwriter for Elton John’s Candle in the Wind, is enjoying his set of personalized men’s bracelets from the AnKara Designs Urban Harmony collection. Karen and Ann wish to thank Fashion Guy Lawrence Zarian for his continued support.

In July, Ann and Karen were invited by segment producer Cam Frierson to tape two new episodes of the Carol Duvall Show. Ann demonstrated how to apply translucent clay leaves on a glass votive candleholder. She survived her initiation in to craft show demonstration with a smooth completion of her first project. Karen created bookmarks with clay fabric applied to felt in her second appearance on the show. She laughed it up with Carol Duvall when she accidentally applied too much fabric glue to her bookmark. Both segments feature original techniques in the new liquid Sculpey product. Episodes #942 and #952 are tentatively scheduled to air in October. For more specific schedule information, please refer to the Home and Garden Television web site at

Ann and Karen’s most recent article and project, Fiorato Beads with Liquid Sculpey, was published in the August 2000 issue of Jewelry Crafts magazine. The article explores an innovative technique of liquid polymer clay application to clay beads developed by Ann. This unique approach achieves the look of Italian glass fiorato beads.

Visions of the New Millennium 2001, a juried calendar featuring national and international polymer clay artists selected two art pieces from each Ann and Karen for the new edition. An exhibit of all the items appearing in next year’s calendar took place in July in Louisville, Kentucky during the Polymer Clay Haven 2000 event. The calendar will be available from AnKara for $21.95 starting around October.

Several original clay pieces by Karen and Ann were recently chosen for an exhibition called Incredible Clay: Feats of Polymer at the Bead Museum in Glendale Arizona. The exhibition opens on September 23, 2000, and runs through mid-February 2001. The featured pieces include a full sized clay mosaic vest which many of you have seen on display in our Harvest Festival booth, as well as several new necklace designs showcasing multiple clay techniques. For more information on this clay exhibition, please contact the Bead Museum at (623) 931-2737 or visit their web site at www.thebeadmuseum.com.

Rock guitarist Racquel Zonte, who’s first compact disc called Give Yourself Away was released in fall of 1999, filmed her first music video this spring of the song Can’t Be Me. She can be seen in the video wearing numerous AnKara Designs belly chains, armbands, and necklaces, similar to those pictured on the CD cover.
