ankara update
Stay tuned for the newest liquid Sculpey projects by Ann and Karen on the Carol Duvall show. The next new episode to air features Karen making a memory book with cloisonne style decoration (episode #CDS-1146). This show airs on Tuesday, February 26 at 11 am Pacific time, and again on Saturday, March 2, at 11:30 am Pacific time on Home and Garden television. Coming up later in the spring, look for two more projects. The first episode shows Ann making a beautiful polymer clay ribbon rose hand mirror(episode #CDS-1212). The second project is a clay fabric lampshade demonstrated by Karen (episode #CDS-1256). For more information, local program times, and the detailed instructions of each project, please refer to the web site www.hgtv.com.

Ann and Karen were invited to participate along with seventeen other mixed media artists, in “The Leather Challenge”, sponsored by the Leather Factory. The artists were instructed to design bags of at least 50 percent leather. Numerous other craft supply companies donated supplies for the project. The bags were put on display at the Hobby Industries Association show in Anaheim in January 2002. Barbara McGuire, author and talented artist, won first place, and was presented her award by Carol Duvall. Some of the bags from “The Leather Challenge” will be featured on a one hour long Caroll Duvall special airing in March. Look for more AnKara Designs pieces in Barbara McGuire’s latest book, Creative Stamping in Polymer Clay, from North Light Books, F & W Publications. The book is due out in May 2002.

Following the tragic events on September 11, 2001, there has been a renewed feeling of patriotism. Due to the large number of requests for red, white and blue symbols of unity, Ann and Karen quickly got to work on some new styles. AnKara Designs made a commitment to donate 20% of the proceeds from the sales of their patriotic merchandise to the American Red Cross. The collection of this donation was in effect for the entire fall season, including the sales at nine Harvest Festivals and the Holiday Open House. The amount raised totaled over $3600.00. Thank you to AnKara customers for your continued support, especially in an effort to help others in need.

portrait of an artist
With art glass in over 1,000 galleries throughout the United States, and several pieces documented in the Library of Congress, glass artist and innovator Stuart Abelman has made his mark in the art world. He received a bachelor of Fine Arts from Carnegie Mellon University, and followed that up with a Master of Fine Arts from UCLA. While in his last year at UCLA, Abelman was asked by El Camino College to run the glass blowing department. As the head of the department, he also developed a stained glass program for the school.

The Abelman Art Glass studio opened in Southern California in 1977. Stuart spent the better part of the first year building furnaces and all other essential glass blowing equipment. The artist uses all his own formulas for the purest quality glass in his exceptional work. Abelman’s most notable accomplishments include pieces in the permanent collection at the Corning Museum of Glass in New York, an angel ornament for the White House tree, and chandeliers for the House of Blues. One of his ornaments appeared on the cover of Sunset Magazine. Stuart has done numerous commissions for the film and television industry. If you wish to learn more about Abelman Art Glass, the number at his studio is (818) 901-0564.

The spirit of renewed patriotism has filtered into the world of fine art. Nationally known glass artist Stuart Abelman has created an Uncle Sam styled clown sculpture for 2002. Each year, Abelman designs two new clown sculptures as limited edition collector’s pieces. For the patriotic clown the artist wished to reflect the essence of the times by having the clown hold a red, white, and blue ribbon with a star in his hand. Having known Ann and Karen for a number of years, Stuart requested that they design a special ribbon out of polymer clay for his latest sculpture. The sisters are pleased to have the opportunity to work with Stuart Abelman in this collaborative work.
