Spring 2003

ankara update
Sisters Ann and Karen Mitchell are pleased to announce the release of their first full length craft book titled “Liquid Polymer Clay: Fabulous New Techniques for Making Jewelry and Home Accents.” This 144 page project and technique book, published by Krause Publications, is the first comprehensive book available on the topic of liquid polymer clay, and will be available on May 22, 2003. Advanced orders for signed copies of the book can be placed at the AnKara Designs website at www.AnKaraDesigns.com or by calling Ann and Karen at (626) 798-8491. The book will also be available in the AnKara Designs booth at the Harvest Festival shows starting in fall. The text covers basic handling and applications of liquid and solid polymer clay, and showcases 11 original techniques in 22 projects, beautifully illustrated with more than 250 full-color photographs by Cristopher Lapp. Many of the projects incorporate elements, tools, or concepts from sewing, rubber stamping, scrapbooking, painting, stained glass, lampwork, enamelling, mosaics, cloisonne, ceramics, and marbling.

Antique styled AnKara Designs jewelry will be featured in the upcoming Disney film, “The Haunted Mansion”. Starring Eddie Murphy and Jennifer Tilly, this spooky comedy is due to arrive in theatres November 26, 2003. The sisters were asked to design 1880’s style necklace sets for a masquerade ball scene.

On the small screen, a dog bone on a necklace is just one of the AnKara specialty pieces made for the film “Ghost Dog: A Detective’s Tail”. The film aired in January 2003 on the PAX cable station. Daphne Zuniga, starring opposite Jack Wagner, played a police veterinarian who treats police dogs.

Coming up on the Carol Duvall Show on HGTV, look for three new episodes with liquid polymer clay projects from Ann and Karen. In the first episode (CDS-1360), Karen demonstrates a bow tie link necklace made with solid polymer clay links connected by flexible clay fabric links. The episode airs Thursday, March 13 at 11:00 am Pacific time and 2:00 pm Eastern time on Home and Garden television. Coming up later in the spring, stay tuned for two more new projects. The first episode shows Karen making a leopard print license plate frame (episode #CDS-1413). The second project is a mosaic transfer necklace demonstrated by Ann (episode #CDS-1457). The air dates are not yet scheduled, so please refer to the HGTV web site (www.HGTV.com) and search by episode number. Instructions for all of the previous projects can also be found at this site. Also, tune in for a repeat of the terra cotta tile segment (episode CDS-1029) airing at 11:00 am Pacific and 2:00 pm Eastern time on Friday, March 7.
